  • Lunar phenomenon seen on extremely young and old crescents as bright areas of illumination along the segmented limb. The striking resemblance to 2nd and 3rd contacts during a total solar eclipse was first noted by American astronomer Stephen Saber.

  • Broken arc of illuminated lunar mountain peaks generally occuring within 24 hours of New Moon. The phenomenon is rarely observed due to the Moon's varying libration and proximity to the Sun. 

    A small number of these illuminations are more commonly seen developing at the tips of fully-formed crescents.
